The Dead Speak!
It's been a long time since I've published a update here, . . . but look where we are.
Welcome testers to Portal 64 v1.10, also known as The Funnel and Editor Update!!!
It's been well over a year since I've made any kind of progress on this project, and for a long time the development of the game has been dead. However, this project is now returning from beyond the Early-Access-grave for two important reasons:
#1: Portal 2 in LEGO?
Recently, I've spent my free time working on a submission for LEGO IDEAS, and platform that allows fans to submit their own ideas for new LEGO models, and have the chance to see them officially made. If you're not familiar, the platform works on the basis of voting: projects with enough supporters re given the opportunity to be assessed and judged by LEGO designers.
If you haven't already guessed from the title, I've gone ahead and created my own interpretation of GLaDOS (as well as many other iconic Portal elements) in everyone's favorite plastic bricks:
If you want to see Portal 2 as a real LEGO set, you can support my project over at LEGO IDEAS! There's more detail on the submission page about the model, why I made it, and other amazing projects currently listed.
#2: Portal 64 has received some much needed attention
Due to a long list of factors, including study, holidays and the current situation, development of this game has been on a long hiatus. So long in fact, that I forgot I had a bug-fix release of the game waiting to be published for the past 6 months. However, I've now not only addressed this, but have gone ahead and added a ton of code changes and new test objects! More importantly, the level editor has also had a revamp; It now contains almost all current testing elements as well as slight changes to the object property window! Unfortunately, this update doesn't include any additions to the game's story. There are no new levels and no new characters, I just wanted to give you the chance to play around with some of the new test elements. It may be a while before another story update; I've got a lot of mechanics to implement first.
Never mind, here's all the free stuff you get!
- Funnels!
- Excursion Funnels are now part of the game! You can soar through the air with a grace of an eagle thanks to this Aperture Science innovation in localized propulsion fields. As well as either being active (on) or not (off), funnels also have two directions of propulsion, which you can toggle either by using an Inverter or switching it's type in the editor (I'll explain later). Currently only the player, regular cubes, goomba turrets, and gel interacts with funnels, and behavior when crossing over multiple funnels aims to replicate the same behavior seen in Portal 2.
- Light Bridges and Portals!
- Light Bridges have had a significant change to their behavior, both in game and in the game's code. As a result, light bridges will now pass through portals! Note however, that a single light bridge will only pass through a pair of portals once. This is in-part intentional design, and in-part an effort to reduce the complexity of their code.
- This behavior has also been carried across to funnels. Placing a portal in the path of a funnel will cause it to come out the opposite end. You can even have funnels from opposite sides passing through a portal pair at the same time!
- Panel Elevators
- The Vertical Panel Elevator allows testers to travel up or down along a single axis only! You can set the maximum height of this elevator by adjusting the height property in the editor.
- Cracked Pipes
- A new type of gel pipe has been introduced, named the Cracked Pipe. This length of pipe is initially sealed, and only breaks open and releases it's gel once hit by either a laser or rocket. The pipe currently allows for two gel types; Blue and Orange
- Gel Behavior
- The way gel behaves has been rewritten so that it no longer falls straight down; It now follows parabolic flight! Adjusting the angle of gel pipes will effect the trajectory of the gel they emit. You can also move gel around using funnels now as well.
- The Inverter
- The Inverter is a new type of object that inverts the type of certain test elements. Connecting it to other objects is similar to the method used to connect Timers. When active, it inverts the type of all comparable objects connected. This currently includes:
- The propulsion direction of funnels
- The gel type of cracked pipes
- The trapped state of aerial faith plates
- New Prologue Level!
- The introductory Level/Cutscene of the game has been reconstructed to make it more visually appealing and thematic. It now feels a lot more similar to the visual designs of the later levels.
- New Editor Items
- Lasers, Panels, Funnels and Light Bridges are now all available in the Level Editor under a new fancy scroll menu on the top of the screen. You can scroll through object options by toggling the buttons on the right-end on the editor GUI, and then select the desired element by scrolling your mouse wheel.
- Editor TYPE Property
- The Type property has now been added to the object-property-window in the editor. If a selected object has possible alternate types, it will display the current type as a number in this checkbox. Clicking on the box toggles through the possible types.
- Editor Heights and Lengths
- The height and length input fields in the object-property-window now accept negative values! This allows you to flip many necessary elements, such as vertical funnels and light bridges, on their Y-axis. As such, the way you change the direction of certain objects is now as given:
- Height
- Setting Vertical-Funnel height to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its direction
- Setting Vertical-Light-Bridge height to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its direction
- Setting Hinged or Angled Panel height to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its vertical direction
- Setting Aerial-Faith-Plate height to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its vertical direction
- Setting Rocket-Core height to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its direction
- Length
- Setting Funnel length to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its direction
- Setting Light-Bridge length to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its direction
- Setting Hinged or Angled Panel length to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its horizontal direction
- Setting Aerial-Faith-Plate length to 1 or -1 allows you to flip its horizontal direction
- Rotation Angle
- Adjusting Laser-Caster rotation changes it's direction
- Adjusting Gel Pipe rotation changes it's direction
- Adjusting Laser-Splitter rotation changes it's direction
- Adjusting Button rotation changes it's direction
As with any update of this size, it's very likely that bugs of some kind are still present. If you encounter any kind of error, bug, or impossible-to-complete level, LET ME KNOW by commenting below!
