On the Back Burner

Greetings Test Subjects!

If you've been a past subscriber to this project, you might have thought it was dead. Well, it's not! Because SCIENCE never dies!

Instead, the delay to this update (and signs of life in general) has simply been due to a decision to divert my efforts in making this game towards my school life and study. It's been a busy past year for me and I've barely had the time to complete this new content. In fact, development of the game this year is likely to slow down even further, as this is my final year of schooling, and the creation of Portal 64 has been put on the back burner while I start to focus on study. So don't expect any major updates for possibly another year, but don't think it's been completely abandoned either.

Now, about this update I mentioned....

Chapter 2 has finally been released!

I originally stated that this game would be a chapter-based narrative, and true to this promised the second chapter of Portal 64 has now been included in the v.1.9 update. This new portion of your adventure has you exploring two new regions of the Aperture Facility; The Overgrowth and Maintenance Tunnels from Portal 2 and Portal respectively. These pixely environments contain brand new testing elements and objects such as:

  • Lasers!        ….. sorry ……     "Aperture Science Thermal Discouragement Beams"
  • Light Bridges
  • Aerial Faith Plates
  • Hinged Panels
  • That clear wet drippy stuff.....   umm, what's it called?   ……   Water
  • Definitely not any spiders

None of these elements are available in the level editor just yet, but that may come later in a future update. The update also features slight improvements to the dialogue system and main menu among other functional changes. Finally, this update introduces you to a range of new characters to help progress the story. I won't reveal any of them to you just yet, but fans of Harry101UK may see some familiar faces.

While this update is a bare-bones experience (it's not very polished and likely has quite a few bugs) it's still the right step forwards towards the finished project I want to achieve. Enjoy it!
